Philadelphia To Host "International" Soccer Tournament

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia has announced it's hosting an international soccer tournament, but all of the players will be from... Philadelphia.

The tournament is designed to show unity among the city's diverse ethnic groups.

So far, teams representing 25 countries have signed up for the Philadelphia International Unity Cup, but Parks and Rec Commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovell is hoping for 32.

"Nothing brings people together like the universal understanding and friendly competition of sports, and there is no more popular sport the world over than soccer."

Lovell says games will be start in September and the final will be November 5 at Citizens Bank Park.

"The first time a soccer game has ever been held at the Phillies ball park."

You can still sign up for one of those seven remaining slots. Applications are at phila.gov-slash-unity cup.
