Regina Price Makes History As Delaware County's First Black Female Police Chief

DARBY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) -- "I Regina J. Price,"... With those words, Regina Price made history becoming the first African American female police chief in Darby Township and in Delaware County's history.

Chief Price is new to Darby Township, but she brings an extensive history in law enforcement from her native Florida. She served 30 years with the Riviera Beach Police Department, retiring as a Major in January before landing the job in Darby Township.

"I'm still overwhelmed it still feels surreal," Price said.

Members of the small township's community looked on, many beaming with pride. Darby Township Commissioner Richard Womack told Eyewitness News what set Price apart from the rest after a nationwide search that began back in November.

"Anytime somebody comes to the interview with a 90-day plan. She went out into the community and talked to different residents about their concerns, I said that's the one," Womack said.

"We are celebrating the fact that you're the first woman of color, but I don't want it to get lost that you were picked because you were excellent," said Pennsylvania State Senator Anthony Williams.

Price plans to delve into her new position promoting transparency within the department and building bridges within the community. While she understands the gravity of the history she's made here, she wants residents to focus more on the goals she has for the township and the 22 police officers she's now in charge of leading.

"I'm more concerned that they focus on my experience," Price said.

Chief Price is absorbing the moment and taking her place in history. She starts her new job on Thursday and she says she's ready to hit the ground running.
