PIFA Kicks Off With Amazing Display At Penn's Landing

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The 16-day long Philadelphia International Festival of Arts kicked off Friday night with an awe-inspiring display at Penn's Landing titled "Article 13."

The presentation used various mediums to explore immigration in the modern world.

Greeted by giant fireballs and shadowy, wooden figures, visitors made their way to the performance area.

Fire, sand, televisions, water jugs, and other items were mixed with live performances and sounds to explore the human element of immigration, looking at the people, their journey and their experiences.

Jay Whal is the artistic director for PIFA. He says there's no political or economic message behind the event:

"Its really to provide an opportunity to ask questions. What art does in Philadelphia for us is helps us understand where we've been and where we are, and I hope helps us guide our way to where we are going."

The Article 13 exhibit at Penn's Landing runs through Sunday night, but PIFA lasts through April 23rd.
