Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Worry Free Vacation

By Jay Lloyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Getaways should be fun. Vacationers don't really want to think about glitches like accidents or illness. But foreign travel requires some health insurance awareness.

While cruising the internet for exotic foreign destinations, it's also essential to scroll through health insurance plans, especially those of us at that magic Medicare age.

"Medicare doesn't cover any expenses outside the United States," says insurance broker Randy Reigner.

Reigner points out that Medicare Advantage plans may offer coverage. It's up to us to know what's covered and what isn't. While medical costs are less overseas, it could still require a large chunk of change. For the sub-senior crowd, know what your own policy covers and consider filling the gap with a travel health plan.

"A lot of these plans don't cover preexisting conditions," Reigner says. "But they do cover anything that's new."

And if your getaway involves a high risk activity, remember, some policies won't pony up if you break something while parasailing in Panama.
