Hundreds Hit The Stairs For Annual Philadelphia Fight For Air Climb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Hundreds of people climbed more than a thousand stairs Saturday morning in Center City to support the mission of the American Lung Association.

More than 800 people made the 50-story hike to the top of Three Logan Square as part of the 10th annual Philadelphia Fight For Air Climb.

Joe Lynch did it in less than 10 minutes.

"This is my 9th consecutive year. It's a total body workout. It was not a piece of cake, but it was refreshing," he said. "It's for a good cause, it's a wonderful thing."

American Lung Association CEO Debra Brown says the goal is to raise awareness while raising nearly a quarter million dollars for research.

"As you're climbing the steps, it gets harder and harder to breathe," she said "It's just a challenge, and people with lung disease go through that on a daily basis, and we want other people to experience that."

Philadelphia Fire Lieutenant Justin Duffand and his squad climbed the stairs twice, one time in full gear.

"It's good for us training, and the actual cause is good for us, because as firefighters we have a connection to it," Duffand said. "We experience respiratory diseases and lung disease through the things we're exposed to over the years."
