Study: Where Jim Kenney Ranks Among Other Mayors On Twitter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia mayor Jim Kenney is among "The Tweet Elite" according to a new study, but trails other mayors in Twitter rankings.

The study ranked Mayor Kenney 39 out of 110 mayors with 1,000 or more Twitter followers.

Marketing and research firm Development Counsellors International tracked the Twitter activity of each mayor over a 60-day period (from January 1st - February 29th) across five categories: audience, frequency, responsiveness, engagement, and influence.

"One thing I took away that I thought was awesome was that the three metrics frequency, responsiveness, and engagement were all one's we were in the top 16 or better," says Stephanie Waters -- the city's digital director. "So I think that shows we are really reaching out to Philadelphians and Philadelphians who follow the mayor really care about what he has to say."

The study didn't account for the time in office for each mayor.

"In three months we have half as many followers as he has on his other account," Waters says, "and so I think that that will continue to grow. The other metric they have is how many other mayors follow him and I'm sure that will also continue to grow especially when the DNC is here, that the convention will dramatically increase some of those things as well."

The mayor still maintains his personal Twitter account (@JimFKenney) so that the @phillymayor account can live on for other mayors.

"In eight years from now when someone takes office, they'll have a big following of people who are ready to engage with the new mayor," says Waters.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake (@mayorsrb) was #1 on the list for high rankings for frequency, responsiveness, and number of other mayors who follow her account.
