Walnut Lane Bridge To Close For Five-Month Renovation Project

By Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Walnut Lane Bridge in Philadelphia is shutting down and will not open for traffic for at least the next five months.

The shutdown starts Friday night as crews continue a $14.7 million renovation project on the bridge that stretches across Wissahickon Creek.

"For the replacement of the existing deteriorating concrete deck and side-walk support structures that are on the side of the bridge," said PennDOT's Charles Metzger, who adds the renovations on the 109-year-old bridge are much-needed.

"So it has definitely outlived its expectancy. We're rehabilitating the bridge to provide another 50 years of usage," said Metzger.

Metzger says the nearly 17,000 motorists who use the bridge daily will be diverted until September when the bridge will partially re-open.

He says completion of the construction is slated for Summer 2017.
