PA Supreme Court Questions Ownership Of New Philly Casino Licensee

By Tony Romeo

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- A spokesman for the Gaming Control Board says he does not view a ruling by the state Supreme Court as a major setback for a new casino to be built in South Philadelphia.

In November 2014, the Gaming Control Board awarded Philadelphia's second stand-alone casino license to Stadium Casino LLC, which plans to build a complex at 9th and Packer. Now the state Supreme Court, ruling in an appeal of the gaming board's decision to award the license to Stadium, has ruled that the board must re-examine whether Stadium's ownership structure complies with state gaming laws.

Doug Harbach, spokesman for the Gaming Control Board, says he does not see the ruling as a major roadblock.

"No, I think it's just the court asking for better clarification of the ownership structure, and the board will be working on providing that and hopefully keeping this project moving forward."

Harbach said he could not speculate on whether the ruling could lead to new proceedings before the board regarding its decision to award the license to Stadium.
