Mother Mary Angelica, Founder Of Eternal Word Television Network, Dies

By Mark Abrams

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- She is the founder of one of the best known cable religious channels in the world.

She took a small television operation in an Alabama monastery garage and turned it into a global force and face for the Roman Catholic Church.

Mother Mary Angelica, the founder of the Eternal Word Television Network, which has a worldwide audience of hundreds of millions, died Easter Sunday at the age of 92.

The foundress, who started the television channel in August 1981 with absolutely no television experience and only $200 in the bank, relied on her faith and the generosity of donors.

She was beloved by millions for her own programs of prayer and reflection as well.

"The most important piece of knowledge there is - God loves me, and God loves you! After that, nothing matters."

Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput, in a statement, called Mother Angelica a "friend and great woman religious of generosity, intellect and Catholic faith."
