Keeping Tabs On Your Bracket At Work May Not Be Bad For Business

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- March Madness is here and everyone is focused on their brackets and there's no exception made for the time you're at work.

In fact, keeping track of your bracket can seem like a job itself. However, keeping tabs on the bracket at work may not be bad for business.

Many hoops fans will be watching and monitoring March Madness from their desks at work. Conflicted employees will be thinking about their brackets and trying not to look like they're slacking off.

However, some experts say, that indulging in some b-ball during office hours isn't all that bad.

"The overall impact on the economy, or the productivity for an entire organization is really not that significant," said Oscar Holmes, Rutgers-Camden Assistant Professor of Management.

Holmes explains that employers don't need to go nuts when it comes to policing March Madness.

While each year, analyst predict that billions of dollars will be lost in productivity during the event, that assumes that the work will not be made up.

"Research shows that most employees just tend to make up the time," Holmes explained. He also suggested that offices should find a way to make the event a group activity.

Holmes says strategic engagement with employees is better than having them take time off to watch basketball.
