PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An annual tradition unfolds on the Chesapeake Bay this weekend as visitors to Annapolis arrive with socks and leave sockless.
It's that special time of year when a sailor's toes yearn to be free of their wintertime shells, known as socks. They want to wiggle in boat shoes, sandals and flip flops. To mark the annual start of a new sailing season, beaming boaters up and down the Chesapeake Bay gather round bonfires for a traditional burning of the socks. That's the signal to the newly sockless about what comes next.
"Time to think about casting off the dock lines and cruising."
As boaters turn their attention to dabbing on bottom paint, servicing engines and heads, rigging sails and getting in a Margaritaville mood, the Annapolis Maritime Museum hosts the annual sock burning celebration, combined with an oyster roast and sail-away music. It's the place to be this Saturday at noon.
