City Program Aims To Increase Philadelphia's Tree Canopy

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The city celebrated the spring season with their annual Tree Philly Yard Tree Giveaway Program.

Philadelphia Parks and Recreation commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovell says the Tree Philly Program has been around for three years.

"It has been incredibly successful. We have given away over 12,000 trees."

Through April 10th, you can register at Treephilly.org to receive up to two free yard trees.

"Trees make our city healthier. They can decrease utility costs. They can increase property values."

This year, Philadelphia Eagle Connor Barwin is partnering with the city in a social media promotion #PhillyTreeTrek.

"My goal obviously is to make the Eagles the best football team in the country. But, I mean it when I say I also want to make Philadelphia the best city in the country and to do that, you need to make it the greenest city."

Folks are encouraged to post why Barwin should come to their home. One winner will be chosen and Barwin will personally plant a tree in their yard.
