Social Media Campaign Encourages Women To Run For Office

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - March is National Women's History Month and this year's theme is "Working to Form a More Perfect Union: Honoring Women in Public Service and Government."

Going along with that, the PA Department of State has launched a social media campaign to encourage women to run for office.

The campaign is called #GovLikeAWoman. One of the women highlighted is Marian Schneider -- the Deputy Secretary for Elections and Administration.

"I think the goal of it is to help women, especially young women," she says, "understand the benefits of working for state government and to encourage young women to consider that as a career option."

The department will use Twitter and Facebook to highlight 20 women in leadership positions within the agency and explain their roles.

"I feel that I am making a very positive impact on the voting experience for Pa. voters," Schneider says, "and that's why I'm working in state government and I don't know that people consider how great an impact they can have working in the executive branch as well as an elected official."

The department will host a Twitter Town Hall on Tuesday, March 29th at noon.

"We're just hoping to start a conversation and a dialogue on women's contributions in government," Schneider says.

You too can join the conversation by using the hashtag.
