NJ State Police Release Statement, Photo Of Trooper Who Died After Being Struck By Vehicle

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- New Jersey State Police have released a statement following the death of New Jersey State Police Trooper Sean Cullen.

Trooper Cullen, 31, died after he was struck by a vehicle on I-295 in Deptford Township Monday night.

"Today, we extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Trooper Sean E. Cullen #7594, who was tragically killed in the line of duty as a result of a motor vehicle crash last night on Interstate 295 in Deptford Township.

Trooper Cullen was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1985. He emigrated to the U.S. from Ireland in March of 1988. He was a 1998 graduate of Cinnaminson High School, and he was an All-American wrestler at Lycoming College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice in 2007.

After finishing college, Sean worked as a Class II Police Officer in Sea Isle City and Mount Holly Police Departments. Additionally, he served as a Patrolman for the Westampton Police Department, Burlington County, N.J., for two years.

Trooper Cullen enlisted in the New Jersey State Police on August 29, 2014, as a member of the 154th Recruit Class. He was assigned to Troop "A" where he served at both Bunea Vista and Bellmawr Stations.

Trooper Cullen is survived by his fiancé, 9-month-old son, mother, father, two brothers, and a sister. He was 31 years old.

"It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the passing of Trooper Sean Cullen, who made the ultimate sacrifice while helping those in need," said Colonel Rick Fuentes, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. "His life and service to the citizens of New Jersey can be characterized as honorable, loyal, and faithful. On behalf of the New Jersey State Police family, we ask that you keep Trooper Cullen's family, friends and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers as we deal with this painful loss."

The cause and circumstances of the crash are still under investigation.

State Police say the 22-year-old female driver stopped immediately was cooperative with investigators. There have been no charges at this time.
