Wawa Opens First CNG Fueling Station At South Jersey Store

PAULSBORO, N.J., (CBS) -- A major gas station chain is now providing an increasingly popular alternative fuel for motorists.
Wawa opened its first compressed natural gas fueling station Thursday at its superstore in Paulsboro, New Jersey.
"We are excited to mark the next milestone, celebrating our first sale of a gasoline gallon equivalent of compressed natural gas."
This venture is a partnership between the franchise and South New Jersey Gas.
Wawa Vice President Brian Schaller says right now compressed natural gas only powers about 150,000 vehicles in the U.S. but those numbers are rapidly increasing and they want to be ahead of the curve when it comes to providing alternative fuel sources.
"Compressed natural gas is a worthy alternative to traditional fuels like gasoline and diesel. Gasoline and diesel are still going to be a dominant fuel in this country, our infrastructure is built around it, but there's no question over the next 25 years it's projected to decline 10 percent," said Schaller.
Wawa officials say in addition to being cleaner burning, CNG vehicles show an average reduction in ozone-forming emissions of 80 percent compared to gasoline vehicles.
