Crews Put Finishing Touches On This Year's Phila. Flower Show

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Pennsylvania Convention Center is undergoing a transformation as the finishing touches are being put on this year's Philadelphia Flower Show.

Piles of dirt, sand and mulch cover the convention center floor as thousands of workers scramble to finish exhibits honoring America's National Parks.

"The beauty of Yosemite and Yellowstone, and Acadia up in Maine. But also the regional parks in the Philadelphia area." Flower Show spokesman Alan Jaffe says it will all be done by Friday morning.

"We've got some life-sized sculptures being created here."

One of them is a massive bison built by artist Emily White, who is just as much a fan as she is a participant. This is her first Flower Show experience.

"Walking in here, it's like a forest. I was just...it blew me away," White said. "There's so much sculpture going on. This is an amazing opportunity, and I look forward to the final show."

After walking through the Timber Lodge at the main entrance to the exhibit hall, guests can navigate through a miniature tour of America's natural treasures.

"From the redwood trees, to the meadowlands and wild flowers, to the sea coasts," Jaffe said.

There's a booth set up where visitors can speak with National Park Service Rangers, and get an education on the parks near and far.

Jack Blandy from Stony Bank Nurseries in Glen Mills is in charge of the Yellowstone exhibit.

"In addition to the thousands of wild flowers, we also have the geothermals which will be putting off mist and water. We have a mudpit."

The show opens to the public at 8 a.m. Saturday morning.

KYW Newsradio's award-winning Reporters Roundup, hosted by anchor Steve Nikazy, will be broadcasting live from the Philadelphia Flower Show on Friday, March 4.  Steve and the Reporters Roundup crew will be live at 12:30, 3:30 and 5 PM in the Grand Hall of the Pennsylvania Convention Center.  And on Monday, March 7, Talkradio 1210 WPHT hosts Rich Zeoli and Dawn Stensland will have a live "Happy Hour" broadcast from 3 until 6 PM.
