Camden Student Scores Big On The Court And In The Classroom

By Pat Gallen

CAMDEN, N.J., (CBS) -- A local athlete is scoring big on the court and the classroom as well. Donovan Guess is a gentleman, a scholar and he also happens to be a baller.

When a high school basketball player averages nearly 40 points per game, heads will turn. Guess is a senior at Leap Academy in Camden and he is the student behind some incredible stats this season.

However, they weren't quite good enough for him. "It was decent," Guess said of his season. "It could have been better."

Leap Academy's season ended with a loss in the South Jersey Group 1 playoffs. Guess posted 36 points and 10 rebounds on the night, but for the 6'2" guard, it's not just about his stats on the court. It's about his numbers in the classroom as well.

"Every business course he's taken, he has a 4.0 GPA," said Helen Redmond, Guess' teacher. "He has a GPA of 3.8 as it is overall with all of his classes, so he will definitely be graduating at least in the business academy top five."

"Grammar school students are coming in to come and see him," said Principal Jorge Calixto. "It's his image. It's his story. I mean it's great that we're actually now shining on the children that we serve all the time."

One of the reasons Guess is ready for the next step is due to Leap Academy's flawless graduation rate which is 100 percent Calixto said.

So what's Guess' next step? Some impressive schools are on his radar.

"UPenn...Princeton...Hopefully I can continue playing basketball and get my degree in business," Guess said.

He plans to pursue sports management in hopes of maybe being an agent. "If I can't play, I want to be around it," Guess explained.
