Should Temple's Football Team Get Credit For Increase In Applications To University?

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Temple University is seeing a jump in applications, and any sports fan could tell you why that might be.

Months after the Temple football team finished a 10-4 season in which they beat Penn State and came this close to topping Notre Dame, applications to Temple are up 15 and a half percent.

William Black, senior vice provost for enrollment management says the national attention certainly caused more students to consider Temple.

"We have to acknowledge that the tremendous visibility that the university got through this past season of football. It is true that students are interested in that kind of excitement on campus."

Black said the primary factors, though, were likely Temple's use of a common application allowing students to apply to more than one school and making it optional for applicants to submit standardized test scores.

And consider, two years ago, applications were up 27 percent while the football team was 2-10.
