Special Deliveries: Babies Born On Leap Day

By Stephanie Stahl

PAOLI, Pa., (CBS) -- February 29th marks that extra day that comes with a leap year.

But getting an extra day every four years is a little confusing if you just had a baby today. New parents are trying to do the math when it comes to having a baby on this day.

"Bailey was born at 4:34 this morning on 2/29," said Stephanie.

A very content Bailey resting in her mother's arms is unaware of how special it is to be born on February 29th.

"It's taking a little bit of getting used to," said Stephanie.

Her mom Stephanie was due last week and was hoping to avoid giving birth on this leap year day.

"We were talking about when are we going to celebrate her birthday," said Stephanie.

But Bailey's dad Chris, an electrical engineer, is in charge of the math.

"I've done all the calculations so 4, 8, 12, 16, it'll be a big blowout for the little lady," said Chris.

"Now that I'm thinking about it, it's probably something pretty cool for her," said Stephanie.

Usually there's no question, you celebrate the day you were born, except when it's a leap year.

After just giving birth to little Nicholas, his mom Talia isn't so clear on his birthday party plan.

(Stahl:) "Have you thought about when your going to celebrate birthdays?"

"Well, no, I mean, maybe the 28th, I don't know," said Talia.

Nicholas' dad Brandon, who didn't just give birth, has a clear idea and says the party will be on the 28th.

"But every four years we'll have a big bash, so it'll be awesome," he said.

"It's been a very busy day here so far," said Main Line Health obstetrician Dr. Anne Bussard.

Dr. Bussard predicts a total of 12 babies will be delivered by the end of the day.

"Last leap year we only had four or five," said Dr. Bussard.

She agrees that while it's confusing for parents to decide the actual celebration day, leap year or not, for these families today was a wonderful birth day.

Leap days are needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth's revolutions around the Sun.

Like Nicholas' parents, Bailey's mom and dad say they'll celebrate on February 28th next year.

Both sets of parents say that no matter what day their little ones were born, they feel blessed to have healthy, happy babies.
