Universal African Dance And Drum Ensemble Visits South Jersey School

By Paul Kurtz

GLASSBORO, N.J, (CBS) -- Glassboro Intermediate School got an adrenaline rush of world culture and diversity.

Students found it nearly impossible to sit still as they watched the dancers in colorful African garb whirling, jumping and rejoicing in rhythm to the thunderous pounding of the drums.

The Universal African Dance and Drum Ensemble is locally grown and internationally known. On Friday they took a short trip to Glassboro to give an electrifying tutorial as part of the school's annual African American assembly. They were brought in by teacher and Student Government adviser Monequie Stowman, who remembered seeing the ensemble at Glassboro High a few years ago.

"I think it's amazing to give the kids this kind of experience and I think the kids received it well. The kids danced in the stands if you look back and they did awesome. I think it was phenomenal," said Stowman.
