The latest finds that it may substantially lower the risk of alcohol-related cirrhosis.

Researchers looked at nine studies, including 430,000 participants, that examined the relationship between coffee consumption and the risk of cirrhosis.

In eight of the studies examined, researchers found increasing coffee consumption by two cups per day was "associated with a statistically significant reduction in the risk of cirrhosis."

"For example, compared to no coffee, 1 cup per day was associated with a 22% lower risk of cirrhosis and 4 cups per day was associated with a 65% lower risk. However, there may be an upper limit beyond which there is no further benefit," Dr. Oliver Kennedy, who conducted the research as part of a team at Southampton University in the United Kingdom, told CNN.

He added, "But while coffee may reduce the risk of cirrhosis, it will not fully counteract the harmful effects of excess alcohol consumption."
