Kenney Admin. Continues Push To Get Parents To Sign Up For Quality Pre-K Programs
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Mayor Kenney wants parents to know that there are seats available at quality Pre-K centers, and the state is helping to pick-up the tab.
"Look who we have here! The mayor!"
The director at Kai's Komfy Corner at 9th and Tasker had to tell her toddlers who the visitor in the suit was. It was Mayor Kenney -- dropping by the South Philly daycare, to urge parents to apply for state-funded Pre-K.
"There's about 250 or so additional seats that are available through the state's funding," he says. "And people should take advantage of it."
And quality Pre-K has advantages over cheaper alternatives, says Dena Short, a state preschool specialist. They include qualified teachers, approved facilities, and even snacks.
"We prefer apples and fruit! Oranges and bananas as opposed to chips and cheese twists," she says.
Governor Wolf's emergency budget released money for 1,500 new seats citywide under the state's Pre-K Counts program.
