Gardens Destroyed At Phila. High School

By Diana Rocco

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A large garden was destroyed at a Philadelphia school.

"I just can't believe that it looks like this."

Deep muddy divots and ruts covering all of Lankenau High School's campus. The destruction has students in tears.

"It just really took a toll on me because I have made an impact in the school and for it to just be thrown away like that, like nobody cares," said one student.

"For you to wreck a whole high school campus is just wrong," said another student.

Students and staff first noticed a few muddy tire tracks Tuesday morning but the next morning they saw this.

"But when we came in on Wednesday the culprits came back and they did more damage and they ruined all of our gardens," said Principal Karen Dean.

Lankenau is an environmental high school. Students have made cultivating the grounds their project, building gardens and holding classes on the fields which are now a muddy mess.

"We just don't understand why it was done it has no purpose but one thing about it my students have turned their anger into action," said Dean.

"I feel as though someone was being stupid I hope that no one has a vendetta against Lankenau," said a student.

A group of seniors are rallying to save the grounds and undo the damage that was done.

"What I truly want to see happen is just us get our field back," said a student.

Police estimate the damage here at about $12,000 and say whoever did this was using some type of truck. They are asking anyone with information to come forward. But in the meantime students are trying to raise their own funds and hope to have these fields fixed by Spring.
