3 Hospitalized After 7-Vehicle Crash On Icy I-78

SUMMIT, N.J. (CBS/AP) — Seven vehicles, including a commuter bus, have been involved in four separate crashes on Interstate 78 in Union County.

State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Flynn said that 11 people on the Trans-Bridge commuter bus sustained minor injuries on Tuesday morning and three were transported to Overlook Hospital for treatment.

Flynn says the road was icy at the time of the crash, around 5:15 a.m.

He says that eight other vehicles spun out at the location at mile marker 50, but that none sustained damage.

The express lanes of the highway were closed for more than an hour but have reopened.

The accidents come just days after a massive pileup on I-78 in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, involving dozens of vehicles that killed three people and sent dozens to the hospital.

The winter weather also lead to that crash. Officials blamed whiteout conditions from a snow squall for that pileup that happened about 75 miles northwest of Philadelphia.
