SEPTA Prepared To Deal With Any Problems Caused By Extreme Cold

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It will be a dangerously cold weekend, and the sub-freezing temperatures could cause some problems in the Delaware Valley, particularly for SEPTA and it's commuters. But the transit agency says its prepared to deal with the latest winter blast.

SEPTA spokeswoman Heather Redfern says trains, like many other things, don't run so well in cold weather.

"When we get to these low temperatures, we implement a speed restriction," she says, "so they are going over slower so as not to pull wires down or have any issues with the rails."

Buses have trouble getting started on days like this, as well, so a team of mechanics is standing by.

For drivers, hitting the roads in the morning could be tricky with patches of black ice out there. Some secondary roads and side streets are under a thin, slick layer of snow because they weren't treated.

Redfern says unexpected snow squalls create slippery conditions, so buses may be detoured in some of the areas of the region with steep hills.

Check with SEPTA's website for the latest conditions on your bus route.
