Officers Save A Life In Montgomery County

PENN VALLEY, Pa., (CBS) -- Most days, Lower Merion Police Officer Jeff Sullivan starts his dayside tour with a stop at the Wawa on Montgomery Avenue in Penn Valley for a cup of coffee.

But this day, for the 21 year veteran and his partner Officer Rob Witt, was no ordinary day.

Before Sullivan could take his first sip, the pair was busy saving the life of a woman, sprawled unconscious outside the store, as her worried mother stood beside her.

In an interview with CBS3's Walt Hunter, seen first and exclusively on CBS3 Eyewitness News at 6, the officers explained how they instantly went into action to save the woman's life.

Grabbing a portable defibrillator from their patrol car, the officers used it to administer a lifesaving shock, restoring heart rhythm, while they also performed CPR.

Minutes later, following the ambulance to a local hospital, the two officers were at the woman's side, with her mother, as she appeared to begin making a full recovery.

Exact details of the woman's medical issues and condition weren't immediately available.

And, in a lifesaving twist, they explained that normally they would have rolled out on patrol earlier, but they were attending a refresher course on AED's and CPR at their headquarters.

Just 20 minutes later, they would use those skills to save the stricken woman's life.
