Bank Branches Getting Digital Makeovers

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Bank branches are changing with the times. As more of us take our finances online, some companies are closing brick-and-mortar locations or shutting down drive-thru window service. Others are giving their branches a digital makeover.

Touchscreens have replaced tellers in the new-look PNC Bank, but that doesn't mean customers will go it alone.

"The branch staff is there to greet you and to really begin engaging folks in conversation and understand what's the question or need you have."

Instead of standing in line, you'll do business at an ATM, or a financial consultant will walk you through the process.

Spokesman Jason Beyersdorfer says they get it: sometimes there's a certain comfort, if not a real need, in talking or transacting one-on-one.

"Whether you're an individual or business owner, you still want to be able to come in, have that conversation -- 'I'd like somebody be able to help me understand that it's being completed the way it should be, and that it's all seamless.'"

PNC locations in Malvern and Paoli were the among first to convert to the new concept that now is in around 350 of the bank's 2700 branches. Ten more in our area will follow this year.

"It'll really show folks how the tech works, help them get comfortable with it, and really understand how you can now start to bank more efficiently on the terms you want to."
