Temple Football Stadium Talks Continue, Still Without Mayor's Support
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Temple University Board meets today to once again discuss putting a football stadium on its North Philadelphia campus, while the mayor continues to oppose the idea.
The board broke off the stadium discussion at its December meeting, upon learning of Jim Kenney's opposition to the idea and is set to continue it today, though not much has changed from Kenney's perspective:
"Temple has a way to go with the community before the discussion of a stadium can take place in earnest."
Kenney says he's still trying to talk the Eagles into dropping their demand for $12-million and double the rent for Temple's continued use of the taxpayer-subsidized Linc:
"I'm trying to hopefully get the Eagles to understand the economic situation that Temple's in."
He says if that doesn't pan out, Temple will have to address some ongoing issues:
"Some of those issues deal with student behavior, some of them deal with the bad behavior of developers."
Kenney says, in the end, he'll defer to council president Darrell Clarke, in whose district Temple sits. Clarke has declined KYW Newsradio's request for comment on where he stands on the project.
