Eagles Release Riley Cooper

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Philadelphia Eagles have released Riley Cooper, the team announced on Monday.

Cooper, 28, was set to command a $5.3 million cap hit in 2016. The Eagles will have to eat $2.4 million in dead money, saving $2.9 million by releasing Cooper.

In July of 2013, Cooper was caught using a racial slur at a Kenny Chesney concert, causing friction between him and the fan base.

Cooper was a fifth-round draft pick of the Eagles in 2010. He played in all 48 games over the past three seasons. His best season came in 2013, when he caught 47 balls for 835 yards and eight touchdowns, earning him a five-year contract extension worth $22.5 million.

This past season, Cooper had just 21 catches for 327 yards and two touchdowns.
