Police Officer Dragged By Car In Overbrook

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Philadelphia police officer escaped serious injury when he was dragged by a car that sped away from a traffic stop in Overbrook. The officer was carried several dozen feet and the driver was arrested miles away after police caught up to him.

It all started around 2 a.m. at 60th Street and Lancaster Avenue.

Police say they smelled alcohol in the car and the driver appeared to be intoxicated. Investigators say the driver shifted into gear, hit the gas and knocked the officer in front of him off-balance, forcing the officer to hold on to avoid being run over, dragging him 20 feet before he let go.

The officer wasn't hurt and police chased after the driver, who was spotted about 30 minutes later in the area of City and Belmont Avenues.

Police say they tried to stop him in the Target Parking lot on Monument Road, but the car sped off, and then crashed into another vehicle near Ridge Avenue and Kelly Drive.

Police say the driver tried to run away on Ridge, but officers found him on a nearby tennis court where they arrested him.
