What's Cooking on 1060: 'Snap Kitchen' Opens In Philly

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A handful of so-called healthy meal convenience stores are opening this month in Philadelphia -- and the Snap Kitchen concept is making its way to the East Coast from Austin, Texas.

Snap Kitchen CEO Dave Kirchhoff describes Snap Kitchen as a healthy grab-and-go food store.

"Think of it as the prepared section of Whole Foods," Kirchhoff says, "but everything is good for you."

He says it's a brand new concept.

"Because it's just these shelves of this prepackaged, perfectly portioned meals."

And the food is made locally.

"It's prepared in a kitchen in Philadelphia," Kirchhoff says. "Everything is made from scratch every day."

Philadelphia is the first east coast city for this Texas company.

"I spent 14 years at Weight Watchers, seven as the CEO," Kirchhoff says, "and for the entire time I was praying for somebody to invent this specific idea."

He says everything they make is healthy.

"Typical calories are going to be anywhere from 250-350," Kirchhoff says, "but we have small, medium and large."

Four Snap Kitchens open this month in Rittenhouse Square, Fairmount, Old City and Malvern, with additional locations planned for Midtown Village, Villanova and Cherry Hill before the year is out. Why the sudden influx of stores?

"Because the kitchen can support a good number of stores," Kirchhoff says, "and the whole point of Snap is that it's hyper convenient."
