Falls Bridge Closed For Repairs
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Starting Monday, the historic Falls Bridge in Philadelphia's East Falls neighborhood will be closed for more than a month as crews make repairs.
No cars will be allowed to pass over the Falls Bridge, as a contractor works on structural support. The city's Chief Engineer and Surveyor Darin Gatti says, it was time.
"Many times as a bridge gets older, the deterioration will suddenly start to accelerate," said Gatti.
Gatti says this is routine, and happens about every two years.
"There never was an imminent danger to anyone," said Gatti.
One sidewalk will remain open for pedestrians and bikers. The repairs will last about 40 days.
"Closures are very inconvenient for everyone, we recognize that and we wouldn't be closing it to do this work if we didn't think it was necessary," said Gatti.
