Brent Celek: Told Garrett He Can Be Good In Chip Kelly's Offense

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Chip Kelly is going from Philly to San Fran, but he's still going to be coaching a tight end named Celek.

Kelly, who coached Eagles tight end Brent Celek for the past three seasons, is now going to coach Brent's younger brother Garrett with the San Francisco 49ers.

"I told [Garrett]," Brent Celek told Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show on Monday, "I was like, 'You're going to have a good opportunity out there. Get in touch with him, get a hold of him, and you can be a good player in that offense.'"

Kelly was fired after the Eagles' Week 16 loss to the Redskins in December. Celek, 31, who recently signed a three-year extension worth $13 million to stay in Philly, was a fan of Kelly and his offense and admitted he was a bit surprised of the team's decision to fire Kelly.

"I think [Kelly's] offense really isn't different that anyone else's," Celek said. "I mean, we all run the same plays. It's kind of more a terminology thing, a tempo deal. But, I mean, I had no issues with it.

"I think the players were on board [with Kelly]," Celek continued. "It just come down to we weren't winning football games. We were in good position to win against a team like Washington and we just blew it. There were so many opportunities throughout that season in games, where we could have really turned everything around and we just weren't doing it."

As for the new Eagles' coach?

"I'm excited," Celek said of new Eagles head coach Doug Pederson. "Doug was working with the quarterbacks when he was here the first time [in 1999]. Him being a player really helps. I mean he understands the game in many ways. I'm excited to get to work with him, I'm excited to get to see him call plays. He just has a different feel for the game than most people, just from the fact of all of his experiences and the different positions -- especially playing quarterback."
