Progress In Construction Of Mormon Temple Becoming More Visible In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Progress in the construction of a new temple for the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints is becoming more visible along Ben Franklin Parkway. It will be the first Mormon temple in Pennsylvania.

The Church of the Latter Day Saints recently placed an Angel Moroni statue atop the highest spire of its new temple. Located at 17th and Vine Streets, it will serve more than 40,000 Mormons across three states.

"We're on schedule. Along with the adjacent meeting house, which will be used as a chapel, both will be completed by late summer time."

Elder Milan Kunz works for the church. He says the placement of the statue is a symbolic milestone. Efforts to build a temple in Philadelphia began eight years ago. He says it will allow area Mormons to perform weddings, baptisms and other covenants of their church will take place and excitement is building as the Mormon church grows.

"We are very excited to open up the doors of the Temple, so anyone and everyone can come in and see and tour this beautiful facility."

Kunz says the church will host a public open house in August and dedicate the Temple in September.
