Philadelphia Archdiocese Launches Annual Catholic Charities Appeal With Ambitious Goal

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Philadelphia Archdiocese has announced an ambitious goal for its annual Catholic Charities Appeal.

Archbishop Charles Chaput says he decided to raise the goal for the annual appeal to $15 million, a $5 million increase from past years.

"I decided that we would expand the Catholic Charities Appeal not only to do the things we've done in the past, which is that service to the poor, but also to do other things," said Chaput.

Chaput says those other things include:

"Education, evangelization, support of parishes and spiritual life, care of our elderly clergy and the various mission activities of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia."

In the past, Chaput says that group of needs was covered by supplemental collections at the parishes, something in his words is irritating to the people and the pastors.
