New Rankings: Allen Iverson Is The NBA's 46th Best Player All-Time
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- ESPN is currently ranking the 100 greatest NBA players of all time. On Wednesday, they revealed players No. 46-50 and headlining that group was Sixers legend, Allen Iverson.
While No. 46 might sound a bit low, consider that Iverson headlines a group that includes George Gervin (47), Willis Reed (48), Russell Westbrook (49) and Ray Allen (50).
Another set of rankings from ESPN recently named The Answer as the sixth best shooting guard of all time behind Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Jerry West, Dwayne Wade and Clyde Drexler.
Other Sixers to appear on the list so far have been:
- 52. Bob McAdoo (1986)
- 66. Chris Webber (2005-07)
- 73. Dikembe Mutombo (2001-02)
- 74. Dolph Schayes (Nationals: 1949-63, Sixers: 1963-64)
- 88. Billy Cunningham (1965-72, 74-76)
- 91. Maurice Cheeks (1978-89)
- 96. Bobby Jones (1978-86)
Allen Iverson finished his career with averages of 26.7 points, 6.2 assists and 2.2 steals.
He racked up an MVP Award (2000-01), 11 All-Star selections, seven All-NBA selections, four scoring titles and Rookie of the Year.
With all of those accomplishments, what stands out the most about Iverson was the impact he had on the culture of basketball and life in general. He influenced a generation of players and fans.
For the good and the bad, Iverson taught a myriad of lessons to those who watched him play and develop on and off the floor.
Iverson will not be the last Sixers to crack this list. Expect to see names like Charles Barkley, Julius Erving, Wilt Chamberlain and Moses Malone as the list winds down.
