Weekend Box Office Report: 'The Revenant' Rises To The Top
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It was a dismal box office weekend, not unusual for January, and the historic snowstorm didn't help.
The Revenant, the Oscar-nominated thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio that was the runner-up last weekend, took the first-place crown this weekend, earning an estimated $16-million.
The runner-up was the blockbuster, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, adding $14-million to its record-setting take.
Third place belonged to last weekend's leader -- the comedy sequel, Ride Along 2 -- with a total of $13-million.
The weekend's three new attractions opened to modest returns but still claimed the next three spots:
The comedy, Dirty Grandpa, with Robert De Niro and Zac Efron, was fourth with $12-million.
The horror thriller, The Boy, was fifth with just over $11-million.
And the sci-fi thriller, The 5th Wave, with Grace Chloe Moretz, was sixth with just under $11-million.
Overall, industry-wide totals were significantly below those of last weekend and those of the counterpart weekend last year.
