Cleanup Continues Following Major Flooding In Sea Isle City

SEA ISLE CITY, N.J. (CBS) -- As much of region digs themselves out after a massive winter storm, residents in Sea Isle City, New Jersey are dealing with major flooding and power outages.

Sea Isle City Mayor Len Desiderio says the water flooding the streets is from the back bay and not the ocean.

The beaches were hit pretty hard, but the new dune system did a good job," Desiderio said. "The ocean did not reach anywhere in our community. We have a lot of clean up and a lot of work to do."

Currently, the tides are rising due to high tide, but Mayor Desiderio says that will all change shortly.

"It will go down once the tide goes down and we should be able to move around again tomorrow as normal."

As crews work to restore power for thousands of New Jersey residents and work to drain the streets, Desiderio says stay home.

"Please remain in, don't go driving around, we don't want any cars," he says. "There is some debris on the road of course, please don't go out."

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie says it's about keeping the water contained.

"As these storms get more and more intense, it not only protects the property of the residents on the beach front, but just as importantly, it's about stopping the water on the beach front," Governor Christie says. "So it doesn't invade the rest of the town."
