With Impending Winter Storm, Safety Experts Warn About Threats From Carbon Monoxide
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As you hunker down and watch the snow this weekend, safety experts warn you to be aware of the potential hidden dangers that exist.
"It's colorless and odorless so people don't realize its in their home."
Middletown Delaware County Fire Chief Chip Lillie says it's prime season for carbon monoxide related tragedies.
"With people leaving their cars running, or if the power goes out having a generator too close to the house and the carbon monoxide getting into the building."
He says if you have a garage, move the car out and start it. And run your generator outside, 8 to 10 feet from the house with the exhaust pointing away.
The fireplace is another another potential hot spot--literally.
Recently retired Wissahickon fire Chief John Leadbeater says his company has already battled two fires this season caused by fireplace ashes.
