SEPTA Suspending Most Services During Storm
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - SEPTA is suspending most service for 24 hours, beginning 4 a.m. Saturday, due to forecasted blizzard conditions.
SEPTA will suspend service on all Regional Rail Lines, bus and trolley routes and the Norristown High Speed Line. But it will keep its Market Frankford and Broad Street Lines in operation during the storm, to help those that need to travel, specifically emergency service and hospital personnel.
'This is no normal winter storm," says SEPTA General Manager Jeffrey Knueppel.
He says zero visibility and high winds will make it too dangerous out there, for customers and its employees to be on the roads and rails:
"I think the accumulations are not out of the realm of being able to operate continuously. It's the lack of visibility - imagine operating a bus or trolley on a city street, and you really can't see what's in front of you.'"
SEPTA's Customized Community Transportation, known as CCT, will have limited weekend service for eligible customers for dialysis.
Knueppel says they will be monitoring the storm, and provide updates Saturday afternoon into the evening - and the end point is subject to conditions, weather and when they improve or deteriorate.
SEPTA carries 400,000 to 450,000 people on weekends across all modes of transportation. This suspension affects between 250,000 and 300,000 customers.
Just after 9 p.m., officials said service on SEPTA Bus Route 39 has been suspended due to weather-related road conditions.
