People Make Mad Dash To Beer, Liquor Stores Ahead Of Potential Blizzard

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  Grocery stores are a major destination point for people before the blizzard of 2016 arrives, but as KYW's Paul Kurtz reports, there's also a major run on area liquor and beer stores.

"They get here rain, sleet, snow, hail. The grocery store and the liquor store are the two main stops."

Ron Kuhn manages what's going to be a very busy Pennsylvania Wine and Spirits Shoppe at Snyder and Delaware Avenues in South Philly.

Shoppers like Diane Smith are stocking up before hunkering down for a long, snow-filled few days.

"'I'm going to be stuck in a house all weekend with my husband so I'm gonna need a glass of wine or two. And we're gonna have movies or popcorn. We need this every now and then. You need to be stuck in a house with your husband," Smith told KYW Newsradio.

Right next door, early bird William Norman walked out of the Beer Peddler carrying a case and a half.

"Might as well do it now. Cause you don't want to get caught in the middle of it. Everybody gonna be rushing and coming at the same time. I want to get a little jump on it," he explained.

The storm is likely to force most establishments to shut down early, but Beer Peddler owner Dan Stevenson says he's determined to remain open.

"We're lucky enough to live just a couple hundred feet from the store, so we're gonna be here."
