Playing It Safe In Frigid Temperatures And Winter Storms

RITTENHOUSE SQUARE (CBS) --  After a relatively mild winter up until now, this bitterly cold weather has everyone taking extra precautions to stay warm and safe.

Blustering, bitter, brutal cold had some of us in this bustling city braving it like a walk in the park, but not everyone feels that way.

With the deep freeze and the buildup looming over us for snow towards the weekend, animal experts say those freezing walks we take with man's best friend are better taken with these tips.

"You want to stick to short leash walks only and not leave your dog outside unsupervised for long periods of time. You want to be careful with de-icing products in large amounts, when ingested they can be toxic to your dog. Just make sure to look out for your dog shivering being a sign that they're cold or lethargic and make sure that your dog can have plenty access to water so they can stay hydrated," Dr. Jeffrey Stupine, head veterinarian at the SPCA Wellness Clinic, told Eyewitness News.

CBS 3's Justin Drabick predicts the upcoming snow event will be a high impact storm system with the potential for heavy snow & rain, gusty winds, blowing & drifting snow, and coastal flooding.  As of now, he says expect the storm to arrive early as Friday afternoon, with the heaviest snow late Friday night through early Saturday, then tapering off by Saturday afternoon and evening.  Traveling will be very dangerous Friday night through Saturday.
