Flames Rip Through Historic Tavern In Cumberland County

BRIDGETON, NJ. (CBS) -- Flames tore through a historic tavern and restaurant in Cumberland County, New Jersey.

The fire broke out around 5 a.m. Monday at the Hillcrest Tavern and Coach Room in the unit block of West Broad Street in Bridgeton and quickly grew to three-alarms.

Icing conditions were hampering the efforts of crews battling the blaze.

Christopher LaBree says, "It was literally just like an old public house, that just continued to be one of those places in the community that where all of the attorneys and people from right here at the courthouse would come. It was really just a great place."

There were no reports of injuries.

It wasn't immediately clear what sparked the fire.

According to Cumberland County's website, the building dates back to 1782, and originally served patrons who passed by Kings Highway, a stagecoach route from Trenton to Cape May.
