PennDOT Monitoring Roads With Light Snow Falling

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Even light snow can lead to tricky driving conditions, especially when temperatures are dropping. So PennDOT officials say the transportation agency is ready for whatever Mother Nature has in store.

When PennDOT 's Gene Blaum says county maintenance managers are keeping an eye on changing conditions minute by minute, he's not kidding.

Within just a few minutes of speaking with KYW Newsradio initially, Blaum called back twice to say that more trucks had been deployed.

He says more than 160 total have been deployed, and more may be added if the transportation agency's county managers believe they're needed:

"They're watching it carefully, to see what the pavement temperatures are, and salting as necessary based on the intensity of the snow, and if it appears to be sticking, we'll certainly be salting the roadways."

He says the operators of those trucks have tools on board to help them monitor conditions. As far as salt, Blaum says PennDOT has plenty:

"We still have many more weeks of winter, this winter season ahead of us, and we will be using our salt as necessary, and we will be ready for the storms as they come."

And no matter how safe the roads look, Blaum reminds you to use caution:

"Remember that if their windshield wipers are on, under state law, their headlights need to be on. Even if the snow isn't sticking, just don't get too close to the vehicle in front of you."
