PennDOT Considers Allowing Drivers To Use Shoulders Of The Schuylkill
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Letting drivers use the shoulders during peak times is something PennDOT is looking at to ease congestion on the Schuylkill Expressway.
Imagine you're stuck in Schuylkill Expressway traffic. You put on your right turn signal and move onto the shoulder to speed up your commute.
Nothing is final yet. It's part of a comprehensive traffic study PennDOT has been doing for the past year.
The agency is considering opening the shoulders at peak times, creating a third lane of traffic between Route 202 and the Roosevelt Boulevard. It would require some changes, including widening the shoulders and adjusting overhead signs and ramps.
Drivers would no doubt welcome anything that improves the flow of traffic on what is notoriously one of the most congested stretches of road in the country.
There's no timetable for when this could happen. It was one of the topics of discussion at a conference Thursday sponsored by the Philadelphia Business Journal.
This would be a first for Pennsylvania.
