Rendell: Senate Using Wrong Approach To Remove Kane

By Tony Romeo

HARRISBURG, Pa., (CBS) -- Former Governor Ed Rendell told a state Senate committee Tuesday that the Senate should not remove Kathleen Kane as attorney general based on the fact that her law license has been suspended.

Setting the stage for a possible Senate vote on whether to remove Kane from office, a special Senate committee held a hearing to give Kane a chance to make her case. Kane did not appear in person but her chief of staff did, contending that the vast majority of her duties do not require her to have an active law license. Former Governor Ed Rendell, drawing on his years of experience as a former Philadelphia DA, echoed that assertion and also cautioned the committee chairman against the process called Senate Address that could be used against Kane.

(Rendell:) "Your complaint with Kathleen Kane isn't that she has a suspended license. You're complaint with Kathleen Kane is her conduct. Impeach her."

(Chairman:) "That is not the issue before this committee."

(Rendell:) "I agree. But I'm just giving you my two cents."

The committee is to issue a report to the full Senate within fifteen days.
