The Beer Olympics Comes To Town This Spring

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- On Saturday, local brewers and tavern owners began laying out their plans for the 2016 edition of Philly Beer Week. Meanwhile, city officials continue to prepare to host thousands of beer lovers coming in from all over the world.

It's still six months away, but organizers will need all that time to put together the massive ten-day celebration of craft beer. Tom Peters of Monks Cafe says Tuesday's meeting will be held at Heritage Restaurant in Center City.

"We'll give presentations and try to get people to sign up right away," Peters said. "Just get people excited about what's going on so they can start planning their events for June."

When we get closer to Beer Week, Peters says the events become more prestigious.

"This year Philadelphia is gonna host the World Beer Cup and the Craft Brewers Conference," Peters says. "So we're gonna have probably 12 to 18 thousand beer crazed people invade our city."

Judges and brewers are coming in from all over the world to take part in what's known as the Olympics of beer competition. They'll be joined by all the locals for the festivities that get underway May sixth at the Convention Center.
