La Salle Upsets No. 25 Dayton

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jordan Price had 17 points and Amar Stukes added 13 as La Salle upset No. 25 Dayton 61-57 Saturday.

Price, who reached 1,000 points for his collegiate career, was the spark offensively, but the Explorers (5-8, 1-2 A-10) used two other facets of their game to knock off the Flyers: defense and an old-school offense.

Coach John Giannini had his team hold the ball on most possessions just inside half court and not run a play until 10 seconds were left on the shot clock. Most of the La Salle shots were taken just before the possession clock expired.

This slow down tactic seemed to frustrate Dayton, who couldn't get their up-tempo and crisp-passing offense in rhythm and allowed the Explorers, who lost their previous two games this season against ranked opponents by a combined 75 points, to stay in the game.

It was also a savvy move by Giannini as he only played six players the entire game, negating the strength of Dayton's deep and talented bench.

Johnny Shuler drained four free throws in the final seconds to secure the win. He finished with 11 points. Tony Washington added 10 points before fouling out and Cleon Roberts also finished with 10 points.

Charles Cooke, in a homecoming of sorts after growing up in nearby Trenton, New Jersey, led the Flyers in scoring with 21 points — his sixth consecutive game in double figures.

Normally a deep offensive team, Dayton (12-3, 2-1 A-10) wasn't able to get much from anyone other than Cooke as Dyshawn Pierre was second on the team in scoring with 12 points and no one else had more than eight points — a far cry from their last three games where the Flyers had 13 players post double digit scoring totals combined.

The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for La Salle, which had not lost eight straight since 2009-10. Dayton also had their five-game winning streak snapped and lost at Tom Gola Arena for the fifth time in the last seven trips to La Salle despite having won 18 of the last 23 overall against the Explorers.
