Thanks To Frigid Temperatures, Ski Season Finally Getting Underway In The Poconos

PALMERTON, Pa., (CBS) -- With frigid temperatures now gripping the region, snow guns have been working overtime since the weekend and the slopes in the Poconos are now white and ready for the start of the ski season.

Here at Blue Mountain Ski Resort, last-minute preparations are underway for Thursday's opening.

"As we're speaking, we are blowing snow. We are opening nine trails and four lifts on Thursday – very excited about that," said Tricia Matsko with Blue Mountain.

Matsko says it's also a beginning for the hundreds of temporary employees who work at Blue Mountain.

"It's been a little bit of a delayed start based on the weather. A little bit challenging of a year. But, you know, we're still right on target. It's not when you start, it's how long you can keep going and the quality of the product that you build," said Matsko.

Matkso says Blue Mountain had only two days of skiing in mid-December, but rain and temperatures in the 60s quickly melted the man-made snow. She says if January temperatures stay between 28 and 32 degrees, crews can and will continue to make snow.
