La Canfora: 'Adam Gase Makes Sense' For Eagles

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- NFL head coaching searches are fluid situations. We know this.

So who is the leader in the Eagles' club house as of Wednesday? That'd be Chicago Bears' offensive coordinator Adam Gase, as he reportedly "impressed" the team in his first interview.

"Adam Gase to me, whether you like it or not, to me it makes sense," CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora told Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show. "His father-in-law is Joe Vitt. [Vitt is] very familiar with organization, he obviously coached there [from 1995-1998 as a linebackers coach]. He grew up an Eagles fan. Adam, those guys have a summer house down the shore -- like Ocean City, not far away. They're familiar with area, he wouldn't be intimidated by the environment. They've gotta figure out the quarterback position right? I mean that's where they are. That's gotta be paramount. This guy, whether he's done it with [Tim] Tebow, or Peyton [Manning], or whomever. You look at his lineage, the time he's spent with guys like Mike Martz. I just think he's born for this. The time he's spent with [Nick] Saban."

Longtime Bears beat reporter Brad Biggs gave his nod of approval of Gase on the 94WIP Mike & Ike Show with Michael Barkann and Ike Reese.

"The feeling among Bears fans anyway, is that Jay Cutler has kind of been fixed from being a turnover machine to being a guy that can hold onto the football and make better decisions and that type of thing," Biggs said on Wednesday. "And I'll tell you one of the things that impressed me the most about Gase this year -- and I hadn't really had interaction with him in the past -- is that they had a ton of injuries here in Chicago.

"It was as if it was a non issue for him, so that impressed me."

The point of contention in the Eagles' coaching search is suspected to be "non-football guy" Howie Roseman, who was re-given control of the personnel department by owner Jeffrey Lurie after the firing of Chip Kelly. In 2013, during the team's last coaching search, La Canfora reported that some of the candidates had "trepidation" in working with Roseman.

"At that point, it just was what it was," La Canfora said on Wednesday of his report on Roseman in 2013. "They were talking to Brian Billick, and Ken Whisenhunt, and Gus Bradley and Gus was probably gonna be the guy. And a lot of coaches were coming out of those interviews with reservations.

"It doesn't mean that this coaching search has to be the same way," La Canfora continued. "And really when they sat down last year, everyone made a bargain. Like no one got what they really wanted. Howie had to concede some stuff, there were trade offs for both parties. No one went into the season feeling absolutely awesome about it. Because in Chip's perfect world, Howie was completely out of the building right? And in Howie's perfect world, it's probably a different coach."
